It is usually listed as 1973 Rotterdam, with Eksit being the usual venue given. Well, the only 1973 show Gong played in Rotterdam was on 73-Dec-22. Actually, this was Gong's first ever performance in Rotterdam. The drummer on this tour was Rob Tait and Diane Stewart-Bond replaced Gilli Smyth on vocals. So far so good. However, Gong also played at Eksit in Rotterdam on 74-Apr-12. On this tour, Pierre was back on drums and good old Miquette Giraudy replaced Diane Stewart-Bond on vocals. Always being one to spend WAY too much time analyzing things like this, the 73-Dec-22 date just does not make sense to me, for several reasons. First, three of the fives songs played here are from the yet to be recorded You LP, which was recorded in 74-July. The 74-Apr-12 date would be the more likely one for playing the yet to be recorded songs. The next issue for me is the vocals. On the 1974 show, Miquette Giraudy was doing the backing vocals. The vocals on this show sound identical to the later 1974 ones, which were done by Miquette Giraudy. So, I am going on record that between the two dates usually given for this show, I think the 74-April-12 is the more likely one. Realize, though, that I am not an expert on Gong and most people still believe the 1973 date to be accurate, so take what I say with this in mind. Then there's the drumming. Regardless of whether it is Rob Tait or Pierre, the drumming on this sounds identical to Bill Bruford. So, I would not be at all surprised if this show actually turned out to be from the Nov-Dec 1974 period! Remember, you heard it here first! *** the below analysis was originally written 03-March-3, before the date of this was widely confirmed as 74-Dec-7 (it used to be listed as 1973) ***
